Asda Nutty Bites

Today's review is an Asda own brand product, so this should be the part where I go on about the usually trustworthy blue 'New!' signs. Well they failed. Again. I nearly let two new bags of chocolates slip by me, thank God I could probably navigate most supermarket confectionary aisles with my eyes closed and spotted a couple of sneaky new additions.
I previously reviewed Asda's bag of mini Mars bars - Caramel Bites and they got the thumbs up. I hoped this Snickers version - Nutty Bites would too.

There weren't as many in this bag as I remembered before but I think they're slightly larger, I imagine it would be harder to fit all the different parts to a Snickers (or Nutty Bite) into a truly bitesized piece. As expected this is a filled milk chocolate with peanuts, nougat and caramel.
The main thing I noticed was the nougat and the caramel. There was a slight peanut flavour, nothing too strong and thankfully just the taste - no claggy feeling at all!
While I could taste the peanuts and 22% of the total ingredients are actual peanuts, I couldn't feel them too much in the bites. If I let the chocolate, nougat and caramel melt away in each mouthful, I was left with small peanut pieces on my toungue so they were definitely in there but to eat each bite properly, any crunchy texture was lost amongst the chewy nougat and thick sticky caramel. I actually think I prefer these bites to proper Snickers because of this. I like peanuts alone but I'm not too keen on them in chocolate weirdly - any other nut is fine! The peanut flavour is kind of diluted here, enough to set it apart from other chocolates but not overwhelm and make it exclusively peanutty, if that makes sense!
I also liked that this wasn't very sweet at all unlike the caramel bites, of course there was a sweetness - it wasn't bitter or anything - but the empahasis was on the actual flavour of the nougat, chocolate, caramel and peanuts.

KP Frosted Honey Roast Nut Selection

A delectable combination of Honey Roast peanuts & cashews mixed with pieces of Belgian Milk Chocolate Honeycomb

I always forget how much I love nuts. And you've all got filthy minds.
I avoid eating them in pubs, I read a study about how many people don't wash their hands after using the toilet and you don't even want to know what they found all over those little bowls of nuts at the bar! I inhale the bags of Marmite nuts when I actually remember to buy some and a couple of Christmas's ago I was fighting a guest for the big bowl we put out - joke was on him, it was my mum and dads house and I knew where they kept the rest that didn't fit!

Well it's nearly Christmas again and as my eyes are always peeled for anything unfamiliar on the shelves, I spied this bag of KP mixed nuts amongst the usual suspects. I saw nuts, chocolate and Christmas trees so that was me sold!

,

My first handful was a mixture of nuts, salty as expected but with a sweet, honey flavour. The two nuts chosen went well together and I could feel as well as taste the difference between the peanuts and cashews.
Mr.1T took himself a large bowlful first and so I was left with the dregs of the bag, some of the chocolate honeycomb pieces were so small I couldn't taste them against the lovely honey flavour of the nuts but the texture of the crunchy honeycomb stood out and although that's three different types of crunch it wasn't missing any chew. The larger pieces were a different ball game all together. The chocolate used is of a good quality and I could taste them at last against the strong salty, honey flavours. I always find with any nuts (as with the Walkers Marmite crisps!) it doesn't matter what you eat with/before/after them, it's always the nuts you can taste for a while after but surprisingly the sweet, milky chocolate was what hung around each each bite.
It didn't come as a shock then, that after the strong honey, salty, chocolate flavours that any honeycomb taste was lost in the mix. The texture was noticable but they really could benefit from being a bit bigger.
I know trail mixes and the like are big buisness over in the US, I've seen ones sold with proper M&M's in, I'm not sure why mixed bags of nuts/chocolate hasn't really taken off here yet but I'm hoping it does soon. In the meantime I'll be trying the other bag in the KP range and making my own for sure!

Snickers & Hazlenut

I'm having a very boring week as snacks go - too busy putting the finishing touches to my wedding (surprise surprise it's all food!) - so my goodies this week have been leftover rude sweets from my hen party, the pictures are on Instagram I don't want to have to put a rating on the blog!!

I thought I deserved a little treat and apparently so did my fiancĂ©e as he bought me home the new(ish) Snickers & Hazlenut.
I think they've run this bar before but back when I was the worlds pickiest eater so it was first time round for me. If you read this blog you'll know I'm not the greatest fan of peanuts, in a list of nuts they're probably pretty near the bottom but I loooove hazlenuts so I was looking forward to this.
All the good bits are still inside so there's no real difference to the outside of the bar and the chocolate, nougat and caramel are just the same as your standard Snickers too.

It's absolutly jam packed out with nuts though! Sadly (for me) peanuts still take up 17% with hazlenuts at a measly 5.6% and I could notice that in taste. Peanuts are still the main flavour but I did notice a little something else at the start of each mouthful - I'm not sure if I hadn't known this was hazlenut I could have identified it. All that said, I think I might slightly prefer this over the original just as it does tone down the peanut taste a bit and the texture is fantastic with the extra nuts, crunchy and chewy and full on from start to finish.
Ideally I would like to see a Snickers without peanuts and just the hazlenuts please Mars.. or almonds...
