Today's American review is of the Hershey's Cookies 'n' chocolate bar. I've reviewed a couple of Hershey's bars before, the symphony here, the darker bar here and the cookies and cream Christmas special bar here. I wasn't particularly impressed with any of the previous bars I'd tried and Hershey chocolate is notorious amongst us Brits for tasting of sick to be blunt - something to do with Butyric acid produced in production of the bar apparently. However in the USA it's considered a tasty run of the mill every day bar and according to Wikipedia it's so popular it's even got to the point where other manufacturers add Butyric Acid to their chocolate! Hershey's sicky reputation are the reason I've to this point, not tried an actual ordinary milk chocolate from the company. I still haven't to be fair as this is a milk chocolate with added cookies.
Before I'd even opened the packet I was slightly disappointed, I prefer a nice thick, chunky chocolate and this is a long, wide, thin bar. Moving on I opened the wrapper and was immediately confused by the scent. I still now can't put my finger on what it smells like - not sick thankfully, but not quite chocolate or cookies either.
Taking a bite was confusing too. You could compare Hershey's in the U.S. To Cadbury in the U.K, and in this country I've come to expect a milk chocolate to have at least a touch of milkiness or creaminess to it but it was completely lacking here. We are known for milky chocolate though, they're English tastes and this bar is imported and made for an American market to be fair. To me it just didn't taste like real chocolate, the closest thing I could compare it to would be cheap Christmas tree decoration chocolate. There was a slight aftertaste that could have been chocolate or cocoa but it was just strange. It still didn't taste like sick at least!
I didn't really notice any flavour from the cookie pieces, they're not like in a Cadbury/Galaxy/Lindt cookie mix in where the cookie flavour is as important as the chocolate. Although the bar is jam packed with tiny crunchy cookie pieces, I think they're there more for the texture. I will hold my hands up and admit I was wrong about the thickness of the bar, because it's thin it melts away very quickly and allows the crunchy cookie to shine. The texture is by far the best part of cookies'n'chocolate.
All in all this bar was a bit meh. It wasn't disgusting as expected but isn't one I'd eat again. I disagree with some people who I've read online claim to have to spit it out as its that nasty but I didn't really get any pleasure from eating it. The word I'd use to describe it is inoffensive.
Rating on the flavour alone is 5/10 but with the redeeming texture 6/10
